After leaving the dance, Neil takes us to a drive-thru so I can grab a couple of hamburgers, then we head to one of the local parks. I kick my high heels off, and we each take a swing. The skirt of my red dress billows up as I push myself to swing higher, and I squeal with glee as I reach max height.

Once I get a few big swings in, I let the swing slow, my bare feet dragging back and forth across the ground. "Thanks, guys! I know you didn't want me to go to the dance, but I'm glad I did. I needed to move on, and the looks on their faces were priceless. I couldn't be happier, right now."

Concern fills Neil’s voice. “It’s not because you broke Teddy’s finger, is it?”

I plant my feet on the soft, black rubber mulch that covers the ground to stop the swing, then pivot it to face him. “No. Why would you ask that?”

“Well…” Neil runs his fingers through his red hair. “It’s just… Some newly transitioned werewolves get really aggressive. It’s why they come live at the compound. It’s partially why Sasson was there. He couldn’t get his anger issues under control.”

Kicking Neil’s feet up so his swing slides forward, I spin to face forward and rock the swing back and forth. “Nope. No aggression there. I was mad at the time, but it wasn’t like an all-consuming rage. It was more hate toward how he treated me and, more than likely, other girls at our school.”

“I’m not a werewolf with anger management issues, but I was pissed at Teddy for you. I think you handled it well.” Ciaran rocks his swing in rhythm with mine. “Neil’s right, though, newborn werewolves do have control issues.”

Neil’s tone turns hard. “Oh, and vampires don’t have control issues?”

Ciaran waves him off. “I didn’t say that. Vampires have other issues, like wanting to drink all the blood, all the time. She didn’t go for the jugular on any of them, which is what an out-of-control vampire would do.”

“Guys”—I reach out and grab the chains on their swings—“I’m not an out-of-control anything. It felt really good to stand up for myself.”

“You looked beautiful doing it. You glowed from the power you showed them. Not many people have the strength to stand up to their bullies.” Ciaran brushes his lips across my knuckles, and I sway toward him, the pull of his presence overwhelming me.

Neil tugs me toward him, his hand skimming down my bare arm and sending shivers across my heated skin. “You were amazing, not because you controlled your new instincts, but because, like Ciaran said, you stood up for yourself.”

“That’s it, really. I’ve told you guys how I didn’t fit in. My friends at my old school were all vampires or werewolves, but none of the human kids liked me because they thought I was strange. The vampires and werewolves had their own lives, which I was never a part of because my parents kept me away from the Hive and the Compound.
